Step-up power transformer for high-temperature, high-UV desert conditions

Reference profile, not a named client engagement. The narrative below describes the engineering approach and typical specification for a class of transformer project. Specific customer outcomes and named testimonials are only published with written permission. Use this profile as a starting point for your specification.

Background

This reference project reflects a typical inquiry for a utility-scale solar farm in a desert environment (such as the Middle East, North Africa, or the southwestern United States). The application requires multiple step-up transformers (35kV/11kV, around 20MVA each) connecting the PV array to the regional grid. Conditions include 55°C ambient, sandstorms, extreme UV exposure, and daily thermal cycling of 30°C+.

Challenge

Desert-rated transformers require hermetically sealed conservator design, UV-stable coatings (3-coat, 250μm DFT), and ONAF cooling rated for full-load duty at 55°C. Standard products either fail type tests or degrade rapidly under these conditions. Grid connection deadlines typically have penalty clauses of hundreds of thousands of dollars per week.

Our Solution

1

Technical Analysis

Review of grid code requirements and environmental specifications. Specification includes: hermetically sealed conservator with rubber diaphragm, silica-gel breather with oil seal, UV-stable epoxy paint system, ONAF cooling rated for 55°C ambient with de-rating curves.

2

Factory Matching

Selection of a manufacturer with verifiable export track record to GCC countries (50+ units is a typical reference). Verification of paint system meeting ISO 12944 C5-I corrosivity category and UV resistance per ASTM G154.

3

Quality Control

Witness of full type tests on first unit: temperature rise test, lightning impulse (BIL 170kV), and short-circuit withstand per IEC 60076-5. All routine tests witnessed on remaining units. Commissioned third-party DGA baseline readings and oil quality verification per IEC 60422.

4

Delivery & Commissioning

Project cargo logistics management: transformer oil shipped separately, custom steel cradles for desert road transport, on-site oil filling with vacuum treatment. Commissioning engineer present for energization and 72-hour soak test.

The reference specification above is engineered to deliver: full type-test pass on first attempt, on-time delivery before grid connection deadline, and after 12 months of desert operation, oil DGA results showing no abnormal gas generation — confirming the design's suitability for extreme conditions.
